MUSIC:
Young Composer's Forum is open to all students interested in learning how to write their own music. In class, we will do games that play with rhythms, melodies, and basic harmonies, and listen to each others work. Knowledge of theory is not necessary, but it is required that students know the notes of the piano. We experiment with using different instruments, and will also learn very simple aspects of notation so that at the end of the 4 wk session, students will have a completed score of the music they wrote. By having their own sheet music, others could then learn their original songs, and the students also have a visual representation/portfolio of what they have accomplished. There will also be a mini concert at the last day of class where either the students, or the instructor, will perform their finished pieces for their parents and class mates.
Video Game and Soundtrack Writing is open to students with a basic knowledge of theory and piano techniques. (Feel free to contact us if you have questions about this requirement.) In this class, we explore different techniques for creating "loops", pieces of music that repeat and are found in the background of games and animated television shows. We will also practice scoring to film clips, in which the music is supposed to develop through variations of the main idea, rather than repeating as loops do. We will start class by listening to a track and discussing briefly what we liked and what we didn't. In addition to using the piano to compose, we will be exploring digital programs, such as Finale (used for writing sheet music), FruityLoops (used for making the beat and tracks), and ProTools (used for audio mixing and exporting to CD format.) At the end of the 4 wk session, we will have a showcase where we present the clips we have scored, and create an audio CD of our tracks.
Private composition lessons are available for those who want private instruction, and would have a project they would like to pursue. Lessons are usually not held on a weekly basis so that the student has more time to work on and develop their ideas between meeting times. All levels are welcome.
Recording Sessions are available for students who want to record a live version of their music. The music can be original, or can be songs they have learned through lessons. They will receive an Audio CD of their recording session, and can also back up the files on a USB drive so they can make more copies of their CDs. As of now, only piano recording is available. DVD recordings and videos of recording session performances may also be available for an additional fee. These make great presents for family and friends, and also capture milestones in student's musical progress.
